Oppiliappan Temple

About 7 kilometres from Kumbakonam, Vishnu shrine and may perform their vows here. All food offerings at the temple are strictly and completely saltless. Salt or any food item containing salt is not allowed in the temple beyond Garuda’s Sannidhi. It is a sin to carry salt inside the temple. Hence the Lord is also called as ‘Lavana Varjita Venkatesa’ i.e. Venkatesa who avoids salt.

UPPLIAPPANKOVIL

There is no separate shrine for Bhoomidevi here and as already stated, Bhoomidevi is sitting with folded hands by the side of the Lord in the main sanctum sanctorum. The utsava deity oppiliappan is never taken out of the temple, without His consort, Bhoomidevi.

The temple
The Temple has a holy tank inside the temple premises. It is 1 km from ThiruNaageshwaram which is Lord Shiva Temple for doing pariharam for Rahu Dhosham. The temple has many Sannidhis for Lord Rama, Lord Garuda Azhwar, Lord Hanuman, Maniappan, Muthappan. The area for pradakshinam has many beautiful paintings of Dasavatar. Legend

Once Sage Markandeya prayed for children. Being pleased by his prayers, Goddess Bhumi Devi was reborn as his daughter near a Tulsi Plant. As the days passed, Lord Uppiliyappan came in disguise as an old man and sought marriage to Sage Markandeya. Rishi also accepted, but he was worried. He told Lord that his daughter is very young and does not know even to put salt in food and also does not know about household things. Lord accepted that whatever she cooked he would eat showing mercy towards the Rishi Markandeya. Marriage was held in pomp and Glory. To this day, the prasadam offered will be of without salt in order to approve the Lord’s words.
]Sri Uppiliyappan Mahatyam
Lord Uppiliyappan was praised by Nammazhwar in his songs as Ponnappan, Maniappan, Muthappan, Ennappan and Thiruvinnagar appan and Opparilla Appan (means not equivalent to anybody). He is also called an elder brother of Lord Venkateshwara of Tirumala Hills.
Prasadam

Oppiliappan temple

The Prasadam is made without salt. It is told that people who eat salt inside the temple premises will be going to hell. The prasadam given without salt is very very tasty. Puliyodharai (Tamarind Rice), Dhadhyonam (Curd Rice), Pongal, Chakkarai Pongal, Vada, Adhirasam, Murukku are offered to Lord as Prasadam.
Darshan, Sevas and Festivals
The Annual Brahmotsavam will be conducted during Panguni and Puratasi Month. The Vasantha Utsavam will be conducted in Vaikasi Month. The Kalyana Utsavam will be conducted in Aipasi. Sravana Nakshatram in each month is important. Separate Kalyana Utsavam can be conducted like Tirumala. During the festivals, Lord Uppiliyappan and his consort Bhumi Devi were taken together in a pallaq. The beauty is that the Lord is always with his consort. Many marriages are held at Uppiliappan Kovil.
Composers
Thirumangai Alvar , Peyalvar , Nammalvar have composed beautiful Paasurams on Lord Uppiliappan and his consort Bhumi Devi. It is one of the compositions in Naalayira Divya Prabandha.
Travel and Stay
There are many lodges at Kumbakonam and also bus facility available from Kumbakonam to Uppiliappan Temple.

Temple history

Thirusirupuliyur

Garuda and Adisesha wanted to establish their supremacy and entered into an argument claiming that one was superior than the other. In order to pacify them Mahavishnu appeared in Balasayanam in this place.

Vykrapadhar attains moksha.

Sage Vykrapadhar in order to attain moksha did penance at Chidambaram propitiating Lord Nataraja who declared that only Mahavishnu can grant moksha. The sage asked lord Nataraja the place where he can attain moksha. At once Nataraja directed the way to the place where he can attain moksha and led him to this place in the form of a Shiva Linga. Endowed with physical strength the sage followed Shiva with Tigers legs so that he can reach the place quickly.

The sage reached the place and attained moksha. Since he followed Shiva with tigers – (Puli) legs this hallowed place came to be called Sirupuliyur. The sage prayed to the presiding deity here and attained moksha.

It’s a age old belief worshipping this lord will cure people affected with Nagadosham.

Thirusirupuliyur is near Mayavaram, but there are no bus facilities to this place.

Temple Location :

About the Temple:

This temple lies in the Tanjore district of TamilNadu. It is 7 miles from Kumbakonam and 3 miles from Naachiyar kovil. It can be reached by bus and staying arrangements are well furnished.

Sthala Puranam:

After the fall of the Vijayanagar empire in Tanjore, Azhagiya Manavala Naicker who ruled Tanjore planned to erect a temple for Rajagopala swamy in Mannarkudi. He appointged his minister Narasa Boopalan for this job. He was to get Blackstones from all possible places.

This minister was a great worshipper of Saranatha Perumal of Thirucherai and wanted to erect a temple for him too. So he ordered his men to unload one stone from each cart which passed Thirucherai. Aspy of the king caught hold of this and informed the king. The angered king came for an inspection. But before that in overnight Narasa Boopalan constructed this temple and to please the king he added a sannathi for Rajagopala swamy too and his plan worked and he was away from kings anger after that the king ordered to complete the temple with his money.

Only Divya Desam where Lord Vishnu is seen with five Goddesses

When time came to destroy the world and finish the yugam, Brahma was worried a lot. He pleaded Lord Vishnu to tell him a way to keep the tools necessary for Srishti and all vedas safetly. Lord ordered him to put all these things in a strong mud pot and after trying mud from all places Brahma finally made a pot out of the sand taken from Thirucherai and saved all vedhas and all necessary aids for srishti. Hence as this placed gave the magical mud which held a lead role this place became the reason for all living things to live even after the Maha pralaya so this place is called “Sara Shetram”.

Nathan Koil Nandipura Vinnagaram

Built by the Pallava King Nandivarma, the Nathan koil in Nandipura Vinnagaram is in the Shenbakaaranya Kshetram, which runs from here up to Mannargudi. Unfortunately, this historic temple now wears a deserted look and is struggling to even meet the daily pooja expenses.

This Divya Desam is located about 5kms South West of Kumbakonam and about 3 kms East of Pateeswaram near Korukkai, in a village not easily accessible by road. While the road leading to this temple is very narrow, it would be a nice gesture on the part of the Kumbakonam State Bus Transport service to run services to this temple, especially on weekends.

Goddess Lakshmi wanted to reside in the heart of Lord Vishnu. She undertook a penance at this place facing East. It is said that the Lord appeared before her (facing west) and accepted her wishes.

Nandi’s curse
Legend has it that Nandi, the vehicle of Shiva, wanted to meet Lord Vishnu at Vaikuntam and entered without securing the permission of the security guards (Dwarapalakas) of Vishnu. This angered the Dwarapaalakaas who cursed the Nandi.

Nandi looked up to Lord Shiva for solution, who wanted him to undertake penance at the place, which was South of Kumbakonam, North of Mannargudi, West of OppiliAppan (Vinnagar) and East of Srirangam, one where Goddess Lakshmi herself had undertaken penance previously.

nathankoil

Accordingly, Nandi undertook penance here to seek atonement for insulting the Dwarapaalakaas. Pleased with the prayers, Vishnu appeared before him. Nandi requested Lord Vishnu that this place be named after him. Hence, the name Nandipura Vinnagaram. An image of Nandi can be seen on one of the walls of the temple.

Another story goes that Vishnu, who originally faced the east, turned westward to look at the spectacle of King Sibi saving a bird by providing flesh from his thighs.

Owned by Vaanamaamalai Mutt
The temple is owned and maintained by Vaanamaamalai Mutt. The Mutt would do well to bring more devotees to the temple as well as take care of the priest and other people working at this temple. While one finds huge crowds at OppiliAppan temple, a few kms away from here, this Divya Desam looks rather deserted. However, it is quite commendable that the priest and cook perform all the 6 pooja services with utmost sincerity.

It is the belief that fights between husband and wife will be solved if one visits this divya desam on the Ashtami day.

Need of the hour for this temple

1. A bus route from Kumbakonam to Nandipura vinnagaram
2. A mini bus service from Kumbakonam/Pateeswaram
3. Increase the salary of the priest, cook by about Rs. 500 per month
4. Devotees to look at contributing pooja items to this temple so the daily poojas could be conducted without difficulty

Naachiyaar Koil Thiru Naraiyur

Located 10kms from Kumbakonam on the Thiruvarur Road is the Naachiyaar Koil in Thiru Naraiyur.

Built by the Chozha King Ko Chengan Chozhan, the Nachiyar Koil has 16 Gopurams including the 5 Tiered Raja Gopuram. Ko Chengan had already built 70 Saivite Temples and this one, the 71st, was his first Vaishnavite temple. Hence, this temple has a lot of resemblance to Saivite temples, in its form and structure.

Prominence to Nachiyar at the Thiru Naraiyur temple
Lord was of the view that in Kali Yugam men would have to listen to women ( husband to listen to wife’s words). Hence, much before that, he decided that he would first serve as an example and listen to the Goddess here. On all occasions, the first rights are reserved for the Nachiyar. Even the food is first served to the Nachiyar and only then to the Naraiyur Nambi.

Being a temple where Goddess has prominence, one can see the Lord slightly by the side and the Goddess is the one who has the prominent position inside the sanctum. Even from the entrance of the temple, one gets a glimpse of Vanjulavalli Nachiyar.

Naachiyaar Koil in Thiru Naraiyur is one of the few Divya Desams where Goddess has prominence over the Lord. Some of the other Divya Desams where Goddess is dominant are Srivilliputhur, Uraiyur and Thiruvellarai. While Srivilliputhur is called Naachiyaar Thiru Maaligai, Thiru Naraiyur is called Naachiyar Koil. There is no separate Sannidhi for Goddess and she is always seen together with the Lord.

The story
Rishi Medhaavi wanted Goddess to be born as his daughter and undertook penance on the banks of the Manimutha river. Please with his penance, Goddess was born under the Vanjula tree and the Rishi brought her up as Vanjula Valli.

Missing the Goddess, Lord is said to have come here to Thiru Naraiyur, given the Goddess all the powers in his 5 different forms (Sankarshanan, Pradhyumnan, Anirudhan, Purushothaman and Vasudevan) and accepted Goddess who was waiting in a wedding attire. Both Lord and Nachiyar are seen here in a beautiful wedding posture, a unique feature at this Divya Desam.

This is the only Divya Desam where Lord is seen with a conch and charka in front of his face. Also, interestingly, Thiru Naraiyur Nambi is seen leaning forward slightly to indicate the initiation of Pancha Samaskaaram.

Thiru Naraiyur Nambi initiates Pancha Samaskaaram to ThiruMangai Azhvaar
Thiru Mangai Mannan (Neelan) who was the army chief of a Chozha king once wanted the hand of Kumudhavalli. She said she could accept him only if he came to her with a true Vaishnavite identity. ThiruMangai Mannan looked to ThiruNaraiyur Lord to give him the Vaishnava identity and help him secure the hand of Kumudhavalli.

ThiruNaraiyur Nambi is said to have initiated ThiruMangai Mannan with the Pancha Samaskaaram, which is the true identity for a Vaishnavite. Thus, Thiru Mangai Mannan (Neelan) became Thiru Mangai Azhvaar.

What is Pancha Samaskaaram – The identity of a real Vaishnavite

1. 12 Thiru Naamam on the body (fore head, arms, chest, on the back….)
2. To include the name of an Acharya in one’s name
3. To have the ‘chakra’ seal inscribed on the left hand
4. To first serve the Lord with food every day and
5. To understand and utter the Thiru Mandhiram

Only Divya Desam Lord to have offered Pancha Samaskaaram
Thiru Naraiyur Nambi is the only Divya Desam Lord to have offered the Pancha Samaskaram initiation to anyone. As a mark of initiating the Pancha Samaskaaram on the Azhvaar, Lord Srinivasa is seen leaning forward slightly, quite a unique sight at this temple.

Thiru Naraiyur Lord praised as Nambi
Lords of only a few Divya Desams have been praised as Nambi. The most prominent among them is Thiru Kurungkudi, the other one being the Lord here who is referred to as Thiru Naraiyur Nambi. An Achaarya is referred to as Nambi and since Thiru Naraiyur Lord initiated the Pancha Samaskaram to ThiruMangai Mannan, he became the Achaarya of Thiru Mangai Azhvaar and hence the Azhvaar referred to him as ‘Thiru Naraiyur Nambi’.

ThiruNaraiyur Nambi is also credited with the bringing together of Thirumangai Azhvaar and Kumudhavalli, as he was the one who initiated the Pancha Samaskaram to the Azhvaar, making him a true Vaishnavite.

ThiruMangai Azhvaar’s 110 Paasurams on the ThiruNaraiyur Nambi
Recognising this special initiation of Pancha Samaskaaram, ThiruMangai Azhvaar praised the Lord with over 100 Paasurams, the highest for any temple. The only other Lord that ThiruMangai Azhvaar has praised with a 100 Paasurams was Thiru Kannapuram Sowri Rajan Perumal, where the Lord explained the Thiru Mandhiram to Thirumangai Azhvaar. However, ThiruMangai said, “Mathil Inghe, Madal Anghe” meaning ‘Wall in Srirangam” and “Letters in Thiru Naraiyur”. He composed two Madals – Periya ThiruMadal and Siriya ThiruMadal. The temple has been built in such a way that one can see the sanctum even from outside the temple premises. With several layers, each comprising of several steps, leading to the sannidhi, the sanctum looks like being atop a hill, on first looks from the temple entrance.

Kal Garuda (Garuda made in stone)

Garuda, the vehicle of the lord, is of special significance at this temple. The story goes that a sculptor who was creating an image of Garuda suddenly found the idol flying after he had made its wings. Shocked at this sudden action, the sculptor threw a stone at Garuda and struck him on the nose. Garuda came falling down and decided to settle here at this place and bless the devotees.

A huge and well built Lord Garuda is seen just next to Lord Srinivasa’s Sannidhi. In the Tamil month of Aadi, Thiru Naraiyur Nambi makes a visit to Garuda’s Sannidhi.

http://www.hindu.com/fr/2005/04/08/images/2005040800110301.jpg

A magical event during Garuda Sevai – Garuda increases in weight manifold
During street procession (Margazhi and Panguni), an unbelievable event takes place at the Nachiyar Koil. While only 4 people carry Lord Garuda out of his Sannidhi, as the Lord goes out of each Layer and prakaram, he is said to increase in weight, that 8 people, 16 and then 32 people are required to carry Lord Garuda out of the temple. Finally, when the Lord is taken outside the temple, Garuda increases in weight so much that 128 people are required to carry the Lord. On his way back, it is said that Garuda mount decreases in weight and finally when he is back in the Sannidhi, only 4 people are required to carry him.

This year’s Kal Garuda Sevai is on 16th December.

Kal Garuda is said to answer the prayers of devotees immediately and remove all Doshams. Childless couples, unmarried women, people with Naaga Dosham etc will also be relieved if they pray to the Kal Garuda at Thiru Naraiyur temple.

Idols of all 108 Divya Desams at Nachiyar Koil
An old Brahmin wanted to see all the Divya Desams. However, he could not visit because of his old age. The old Brahmin prayed before ThiruNaraiyur Nambi, who is said to have given the idols of all the 108 Divya Desam Lords to the Brahmin. This is the only Divya Desam where the idols of all the 108 Divya Desams can be seen.

Another unique feature at this Divya Desam is that the Vimaanam above the Sanctum Sanctum is like a tower. This is the only Divya Desam where one finds a10 feet Brahmma in a standing posture within the sanctum. In other Divya Desams one finds the image of Brahmma on the wall.

Krishnaaranya Kshetram
Nachiyar Koil is the beginning of the Krishnaaranya Kshetram. This continues at Thiru Cherai, Thiru Kannamangai and finally ends at Thiru Kannangudi, near Nagapattinam.

Sarangapani Temple Kumbakonam (108 Divya Desam Temples)

Latest Update(02-07-2009)
Car festival of Sri Sarangapani Temple was held here on Wednesday. Thousands of devotees pulled the car along the four streets around the temple. The tastefully decorated big car (next to Tiruvarur and Srivilliputhur temple cars) weighing 300 tonnes started from its stand at 11.30 a.m. and went its way via the four streets and came to the stand in the evening.
Earlier in the morning Sarangapani Perumal along with Upayanachiar was taken to the car from the temple in a procession. After arthis and pujas were performed, devotees started pulling the car. Sarangapani Temple occupies the third place in the 108 Vaishnavite Thirupathis. Seven Alwars have done Mangalasasanam of the Perumal.

Jeers of Sri Ahobila Mutt participated in the festival. The temple has two car festivals one falling in the Tamil month of ‘Chithirai’ and another in ‘Thai.’ The car festival was not held for many years in between.
Ko.Si. Mani, Co-operation Minister, who represents Kumbakonam constituency in the Assembly, took efforts to run the car. The huge car was renovated and the festival re-commenced in 2007. But encroachments on roads hindered and delayed the movement of the car then. Now roads have been re-laid and widened to ensure that the car festival passed off smoothly on Wednesday.

Lord Aaraavamudhan is credited with helping the compilation of Naalaayira Divya Prabandham

Sarangapani Koil has maximum number of Azhvaars singing praise of Lord Vishnu after Srirangam and Tirupathi
The 2000 year old Sarangapani Aaraavamudhan temple is housed between two rivers, Cauvery and Arasalaaru, in the heart of Kumbakonam, once the capital of the Chola Kingdom. 3rd Tallest Temple Tower. This temple has the third tallest temple tower among the Divya Desams at 150ft after Srirangam(236ft) and Srivilliputhur(192 ft).

one among the three major shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The largest 11 storey gopuram is 44 meter tall and has the dancing poses of Shiva, a rather unusual feature in a vaishnavite shrine. There are two entrances, uttara vassal – opens when the sun reaches the tropic of Capricorn, in the north and dakshina vassal – opens when the sun reaches the tropic of Cancer, in the south.

Some parts of the temple is believed to have been built in the 7th Century AD by the famous Pallava King Mahendra Varma but the real construction of the temple is said to have been done by the Cholas and later renovated by the famous Vijayanagara King Krishnadeva Raaya.

In an effort to test the patience of the Tri-Murthies and in order to find out as to who is most patient, Sage Brigu once kicked Lord Vishnu on the chest. An embarrassed Goddess Lakshmi left the Lord, who in search of her came to Tirupathi. At Tirupathi, the Lord got married to Goddess Padmavathi. To save himself from an angry Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu is said to have hid inside a small cave here. To this day, one can see a small Sannidhi below the earth inside this temple, near the sanctum sanctorum.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_e9_PKq_dJIQ/Src6ujWjTPI/AAAAAAAABU8/KZnPxF13Nyw/DSCF0106.JPG

Undertaking penance to repent his arrogant action, Brigu was reborn as Hema Rishi and Goddess Lakshmi was born as his daughter. It is said that Brigu gave his daughter in marriage to Lord Sarangapani.

Compilation of Naalaayira Divya Prabhandham
After listening to the Tamil hymn ‘Aaraavamudhe’(3418-27) composed by NammAzhvaar and totally swarmed by its content ” Aayirathil Ippathe”( 10 verses in 1000), Vaishnavite savant Natha Muni wanted to listen to the 1000 verses of Divya Prabandham. Not knowing where to go to collect the entire Prabandham, Natha Muni is said to have prayed here and Lord Aaraavamudhan asked him to go to Azhvaar Tirunagari, near Tirunelveli, to meet NammAzhvaar and to compile the works of the Divya Prabandham. Having searched for the 1000 verses, Natha Muni actually got to compile all the Nalaayira Divya Prabandham. Being responsible for the compilation of the famed 4000 verses by showing Natha Muni the right direction, the Lord here is also called ‘Aaraavamudha Azhvaar’.

He is also called ‘Tamizh Vedham Thantha Vallal’.

(Lord, I see you in resplendent reclining form in ThiruKudanthai, amidst Fertile waters and Paddy fields…………….)

ThiruMazhisai Azhvaar and ‘Slightly Raised Reclining Posture’ of the Lord-Uthaana Sayanam
Seeing the sleeping posture of the Lord, a curious ThiruMazhisai Azhvaar questioned if his tiredness was the reason for him to be lying down in his sleeping posture. After hearing this, it is believed that the Lord slightly raised his posture to greet the Azhvaar. Feeling the guilt of having caused strain on the Lord, ThiruMazhisai Azhvaar asked him to remain as is. And the Lord remained so ever after. To this day, one can see the Lord in a slightly ‘raised reclining’ posture(Uthaana Saayee).

Also, after Srirangam (11) and Tirupathi (10), the Sarangapani temple has the maximum number of Azhvaars (7 of them) singing praise of the Lord.

Sarangapani temple boasts of one of the biggest temple chariots and is said to have been given to the Lord by ThirumangaiAzhvaar himself.

Thiru Pallaandu and Sarangapani
PeriyaAzhvaar in his ThiruPallaandu refers to the Kudanthi Lord “Saarngam Ennum Villaandaan Thannai…” ( the Lord with a ‘Sarangam’ bow in hand….)

Sanctum housed on a Chariot

Lord Vishnu is said to have come down from Vaikuntam in his chariot to marry Goddess Lakshmi here at Kudanthai. The main sanctum has been conceived like a chariot with wheels drawn by horses and elephants and is truly a splendid sight to watch. There are two entrances to the sanctum sanctorum, the southern entrance and the northern entrance (each is open for 6 months in a year). There is no straight entrance to the sanctum. The Utsav moorthy here is regarded with the same importance as the Moolavar.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_OaVE4JJtHOY/SrYmKOIhvyI/AAAAAAAAAqA/pVZRKjhz3cs/s720/IMG_5501.JPG

As seen in the previous story( Srirangam) Lord Ranganatha had settled down with the Prana Vaakruthi Vimaanam on the banks of Cauvery in Srirangam. The Lord also told Vibheeshana that he would settle down with the Vaidheega Vimaanaam at Kudanthai. Hence, this temple is 2nd only to Srirangam among the Divya Desams.

The Name ThiruKudanthai
Foreseeing some difficult times, Brahmma placed the Vedhic content, nectar and the seeds of creation inside a pot (Kudam in Tamil), which then slipped all the way and down to this place.

Shiva pierced the pot and the nectar flowed in two parts – one into the Mahaamagam Tank and the other into the Lotus Flower Tank. As the nectar flowed into the tank through a pot (Kudam), this place came to be called Thiru ‘Kudanthai’

A visit to this temple, it is believed, will help get rid of one’s past sins, just as a trip to Kasi in the North, would. It is sacred to bathe in the lotus water bed in the temple tank.

Lord does Shraadham for a Brahmin
Lakshmi Narayana Swami was a brahmachari and was devoted to Lord Aaravamudhan. It was he who built the Raja Gopuram. He was worried about his final rites as he was a brahmachari. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord himself is said to have performed the final rites. Also, every year, in the Tamil month of Aipasi, the Lord is said to perform the Shradham for Lakshmi Narayana Swami.

Thiru Kannapuram

Located 20kms North West of Nagapatinam (20kms East of Tiruvarur, 30kms South of Kumbakonam and Mayavaram), this is one of the 5 Krishnaranya Kshetrams. Lord Narayana himself re-incarnated as Sowri Rajan at Kannapuram.

Walking Beauty of the Lord
This is the temple where the Lord showed Vibheeshana, brother of Ravana, his walking beauty. After seeing the sleeping beauty of Vishnu as Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam, Vibheeshna wanted to see the walking beauty of the Lord, upon which he was directed by the Lord to his “Keezh(akku) Veedu’ (Eastern Gateway of the Lord). It is believed that Lord Vishnu displayed his ‘walking beauty’ to Vibheeshana here on the new moon day. To mark this event, on every Amavasya day at 12noon, Lord SowriRajan is carried out of the Sanctum and walks to the Vibheeshna Sannidhi.

Sowri Rajan- An extra growth of hair on the Lord

Once a garland of flowers sent by a king to the Lord did not reach the temple and hence the priest could not get the Lord ready in time for the King’s visit. To save himself from the King’s wrath, the temple priest quickly organized a garland of flowers from his house and placed it around the Lord. The king found that there was a hair in the garland and questioned the priest, who told him that this was the Lord’s own.

Kannapuram

The priest told the king that he would show it(the Lord’s hair) to him the next morning. Lord here is said to have saved the priest by displaying his long plait to the King. Hence, the lord here is called Sowri Rajan.

Special Pongal every night

A devotee who used to have his daily food only after presenting to the Lord was late one evening and found the temple closed. Hence, he presented the food to the Lord from outside the temple. It is believed that when the temple doors opened the next morning, the entire temple smelt of Sweet Pongal.

To mark this, every night, Pongal is served to the Lord – another feature at this temple.

Lord Narayana in 3 forms

On the 7th day of Vaikaasi, Lord Narayana gives darshan in all his 3 forms
(TriMoorthy Swaroopam)- Maha Vishnu in the day, Brahmaa in the night at around 11pm and Lord Shiva early next morning

Procession to the Sea Shore

Once a year, on the occasion of Maasi Magam, the Lord is taken on a procession to the sea shore near Karaikal, about 20 kms from here.

ThiruKoodalur

Significance

As the Devas came together at this place requesting the Lord to kill the Asura Hiranyaaksha, this place has come to be called Koodalur(where people come together)

The Story

1. The Devas came together at this place and prayed to Vishnu requesting him to kill Asura Hiranyaksha. Legend has it that Vishnu cut open the earth, killed the Asura and reappeared, with Goddess Lakshmi, as Varaaha Moorthy (one of the 10 Avathaarams of Maha Vishnu) at SriMushnam.

As all of them came together at this place and prayed to the Lord requesting for protection, this place has come to be called Koodalur (where people come together). The Lord who protected the village from the Asura has come to called JagathRakshgan- One who protects the World

2. There’s another story to this place: Raja Ambarishi was a pious devotee of Vishnu, so much so that he even let go his kingdom to continue his penance.

Sage Durvasa, renowned for anger, once visited Ambarishi. With the king in deep penanace, Durvasa, in typical style, lost his patience. Wild with anger, Durvasa cursed Ambarishi to lose the power of his penance. The staunch devotee that Ambarishi was, he continued to think of the Lord. Coming to the aid of his devotee, Vishnu threw his Chakra at Sage Durvasa, who immediately begged the Lord for forgiveness and the Lord took back his Chakra.

Hence, one can find the Utsavar at this temple-JagathRakshagan- with the Chakra in his hand.

Pleased with Ambarishi’s penance, it is here that Vishnu gave him Darshan in his full Divine form. Ambarishi was ecstatic at having seen the Lord in his divine form and built a temple for the Lord at this place. It is believed that this temple was washed away and the temple that exists now was built later by Rani Mangammal of Madurai.

3. One other story has it that River Cauvery displayed her grief to the Lord that all the impurity/sins was being washed at the river and that she was feeling that the river here was becoming impure and unclean. It is believed that Cauvery regained all her glory at this place.

Kapisthalam Temple

About Temple:

Situated just over 10kms from Kumbakonam on the Thiruvayaru road (about 5 kms East of Koodalur Divya Desam), Lord Gajendra Varadhan at Kapisthalam is in a reclining posture facing the East.

History:

Raja Indirajimnan was a staunch devotee of Vishnu. He used to be so immersed in his prayers that he would forget the world around him. One day, Sage Durvasa came to see him. The Sage, renowned for his instant anger, waited for a while but with no sign of the King coming out of his prayers, became furious and cursed him thus- “The fact that you are a great devotee has made you arrogant and you have disrespected a Sage, who has come to meet you. May you turn into a mad elephant.”

Realising his folly, Indrajimnan begged for forgiveness. The Sage who is also know for showing sympathy agreed to reduce the impact of the curse stating that he would continue to be devoted to the Lord as ‘Elephant Gajendra’ and that he would one day be relieved of his curse by Vishnu himself.

Another story goes that Asura Guhu once playfully pulled the legs of Sage Agastyar while he was having bath. Angered at this act, the Sage cursed him instantly turning the Asura into a Crocodile.

Legend has it that Maha Vishnu, on his Garuda Vaahanam (a vehicle of the Lord) rescued Elephant (King) Gajendra from the clutches of the Crocodile (the Asura) on the banks of the river by hurling his Chakra at the crocodile and killing it. Thus the Raja was rid of his curse and attained Moksham.

This episode is known as Gajendra Moksham and is enacted here every year during the month of Panguni (March-April).

This is the only divya desam where the Lord provides Darshan to two animals.

It is a Praarthana Sthalam for Rahu

ThiruMazhisai Azhvaar’s only Paasuram here at Kapisthalam goes thus:

Kootramum Saara Koduvinaiyum Saara, Thee
Maatramum Saara Vagai Arindhen
Aatrankarai Kidakkum Kannan, Kadal Kidakkum Maayan,

Kandeeswarar Temple - Kandiyur

Kandiyur- The Place where Shiva got rid of ‘Brahmma’s Curse’ Pancha Kamala Kshetram

Located about 11kms from Thanjavur on the road to Thiruvayaru, this place is called Kandiyur in memory of Lord Shiva, also known as Kandeeswarar, who got salvation from the Brahmma’s curse.

The main deity here is Hara Sabha Vimosana Perumal/ Kamalanathan- Goddess: Kamalavalli Naachiyar(Facing East-Standing Posture)

The story :Once upon a time, both Shiva and Brahmma had 5 heads. One day Parvati (Shiva’s wife) coming out of her pooja mistook Brahmma (because of his 5 heads) for her husband and began serving him by washing his legs. A furious Shiva announced Brahmma and his 5 heads was the reason for this confusion and that Brahmma had become arrogant (because he too had 5 heads).

In a fit of anger, Shiva took the middle head of Brahmma with his hand. Unfortunately though, the 5th head of Brahmma stuck to his(Shiva’s) hand.Shiva went around the world on a pilgrimage to find salvation from the curse by begging for food, with Brahmma’s skull as the begging vessel. Every time someone filled the vessel with food, it vanished immediately, to Shiva’s horror.

kandiyur

Finally on reaching Uttamar Koil, Goddess Lakshmi filled the vessel with food ending Shiva’s hunger. However, to Shiva’s dismay, Brahmma’s skull still lay fixed on his hand.Vishnu answered Shiva’s prayer for salvation, and asked him to bathe at Kandiyur. It is believed that Shiva prayed to Goddess Kamalavalli and Vishnu at Kandiyur and attained salvation from Lord Kamalanathan here.

Legend has it that because Shiva got cleansed of his curse, the deity here is called ‘Hara Saabha Vimosana Perumal’(Hara is another name of Shiva).

Thirumangai Azhvaar’s only Paasuram at Kandiyur goes thus “ Pindiaar Mandai Endhi, Pirar Manai…………….” meaning – Vishnu rid the curse on Shiva, who went begging everywhere with Brahmma’s skull as a begging bowl. Other than worshipping the Lord, is there a way to salvation” sings Thirumangai Azhvaar(Paasuram-2050).

Being the place where Shiva himself got salvation from his curse, it is believed that all our curses will go away if one visits this temple. This is also known as the Pancha Kamala Kshetram(Lord Kamalanathan, Goddess Kamalavalli, Kamala Pushkarani, Kamala Vimaanam and Kamala Kshetram)

Saint Poets Azhvaars (there were 12 of them including Andaal) were ardent devotees of Vishnu. These saint poets composed verses in Tamil and revitalized the religious spirit sparking off a renewal of devotional worship, referred to as the Bhakti movement. The Azhvaars visited Vishnu temples and sung praises in the name of the Lord. Such temples have come to be known as Divya Desams. The compilation of the verses (known as Paasurams) is the revered Naalayira Divya Prabandam(4000 verses)

There are 108 Divya Desams in all, out of which over 80 are in Tamil Nadu. 40 of these temples are in the Chola region (Trichy-Thanjavur-Kumbakonam belt), 22 are in the Kanchipuram-Chennai region, 2 in Nadu Naadu(Cuddalore….) and 18 in Pandya Kingdom – Madurai/Tirunelveli belt. There are 13 in Kerala and 11 in North India.(2 are out of the world)

In these temples, Vishnu is represented usually in one of three postures – reclining(Sayanam), seated(Amarntha) or standing(Ninra) posture.

Situated about 10kms from Kumbakonam, this Divya Desam’s legendary tale dates back to the time of Ramayana. In search of Sita, Raama reaches this place to the cries of the Eagle King Jataayu, which was breathing its last.

The Eagle King, an old friend of King Dasharatha (father of Raama) had fought a valiant battle trying to rescue Sita from Raavana, before the Lankan king finally cut off both its wings. Lying in pain and unable to fly any further, the bird breathed its last uttering the words “ Raama Raama” and informing him that Sita had been taken away by Raavana.

Legend has it that Raama, who had not been able to perform the last rites for his father as he was away in the forest, derived some consolation by performing his obsequies and giving moksham to the Bird. In the Raamayana, this episode is referred to as the death of the 2nd father. It is believed that those who failed to perform last rites for their father(parents) will get liberation from their ‘parental curse’ (Pithru Saabham Nivarthi) if they visit this temple.

While performing the last rites, Raama felt the absence of Sita. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi came out of the Golden Lotus temple tank to stand by his side while he performed the last rites for the bird. Hence, Thaayar here is called Potraamaraiyaal.

The story also goes that Thirumangai Alwar who passed that way did not take notice of a tired Raama, who was relaxing in a sleeping posture under the tree after performing the last rites, and ignored the Lord mistaking him for a Kshatriya.Realising this, Raama gave darshan to Thirumangai Alwar in ‘Full Divine Form’- with Conch- Disc and four hands.

Thirumangai Alwar starts his 10 Pasurams here with the verse that reads “ I have passed the Lord without realizing who HE is…” – ‘Arivathariyaan Anaithu Ulagum Udayaan Ennai Aal Udayaan……………Pulla Bhoothang Kudi thaane.”

This is the only temple where Raama is in the reclining posture with all his ornaments and 4 hands. Sita is not seen with the moolavar, as this temple relates to the time when Raama is separated from her.

Many devotees have got employment after visiting Yoga Narasimhar (a separate sannadhi within the temple), so much so that the devotees have named it the Udyoga Narasimhar.

This temple is administered by Ahobila Matam.

Thalaichanga Naanmathiyam

The place where Chandran was liberated from his curse

Thalaichanga Naanmathiyam Divya Desam in Thalaichangadu, once a commercial hub
(it is believed that Conches were special at this place ) now wears almost a deserted look.

Located 12 kms East of Seerkazhi on the Nagapatinam State Highway, this historical temple said to be over a 1000 years old has connections with the Srirangam and Thiru Indhalur temples.

A redeeming feature is the commitment and devotion of Varadarajan Bhattar, who travels 16kms by bus every morning from Mayavaram.

The Story- Chandran liberated from curse
Chandran, who was learning under the tutelage of Guru Brihaspathi, once cast an evil eye on the wife of his Guru, whose curse turned Chandran into a disease prone body.

Another story goes that Dakshan gave his many daughters to Chandran after being impressed with his handsome looks. However, Chandran fell in love only with Rohini and disregarded the others. Dakshan viewed that Chandran had become arrogant as a result of his good looks and cursed Chandran, who lost his ‘personality’.

Chandran turned to Lord Vishnu for liberation from the curse and is said to have undertaken the following steps as directed by the Lord:.

Step 1- Chandran is said to have bathed and done Kainkaryam at Srirangam for 15 years and got liberated from his ‘body disease’.

Step 2- After bathing at Thiru Indhalur and offering prayers to Parimala Rangan, he had his sins reduced. As per his request, this place came to be called Indhunna (a name denoting Chandran) and this region was referred to as Chandran Kshetram.

Finally, he came to Thalaichangadu Kshetram, bathed in the temple tank here and undertook penance. Lord Vishnu, along with Goddess, is said to have appeared before him in the Chandra Vimaanam and liberated him from all his curses. Hence the Lord’s name here is Chandra Saabha Haran.

Chandran requested that the Lord fulfil all the wishes of the devotees who pray sincerely to him at this temple, just as he did. Hence, the Lord here is referred to as Naan Maathiyam Perumal.

Thirumangai Azhvaar’s Praise
Lured by the beauty of the Lord, Thirumangai, sitting in Thirukannapuram (south west of this temple), sings:
‘Kannar Kannapuram Kadigai, Thannar Thamari Soozh
Thalai Changa Vinnal Naan Mathiya
Veriginra Ven Sudaraal Kannara Kandu Kandu
Kali Kinrandu Ingu Endugola’

In the Siriya Thiru Madal, Thirumangai refers to the special sacred water at this temple:
“Mannum Mani Mada Koil, Manaalana Naneer
Thalai Changa Naan Madiyanaai”

To this day, the sacred water (Theertham) tastes special here at this temple.

Andal’s special posture
Andal is seen in a standing posture, next to Lord Narayanan, with her head slightly tilted to the left.
