About MasiMagam:

Masi Magam is celebrated on February 28 2010 (Sunday). This is a annual festival. It comes in the tamil month Masi (February - March) Magam is the name of the nakshatra. The Makam in Masi month usually comes in the full moon day.
The Masi Magam Festival is celebrated in grand manner in Kumbakonam. Special abhishekam, yagna, puja and aarti will be held in Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Muruga and all temples.

Lankhs of devotees will throng the temples to have a darshan of god on this holy day. Uthsavar will be taken to Ponds and abhishekam will be held. Many Devotees will take holy dip in the sacred ponds.

The focus of the festival lies on the bathing of the deities in the waters of `theerthavari'.The devotees who flock with the processions, take dips on the holy water with the faith that the immersion would actually wash away the sins.

There are numerous myths in vogue related to Masi Makam. Each temple has a myth for celebrating Masi Makam. The most important one is related to Lord Shiva. Legend has it that Lord Shiva appeared as a child before King Vallala of Tiruvannamalai who was an ardent devotee. The king had no child and Lord Shiva promised to perform his last rituals. The king died on a Masi Magam day and it is said that the Lord performed his last rites. Lord Shiva also blessed the king by saying that whoever bathes in the sea during Masi Magam will merge with him and will get ‘mukthi.’ It is believed that every year the Lord visits the sea to perform the last rites of the king.

Once in twelve years the Masi Magam attains even more significance and then Maha Maham is held. Apart from the full moon, during the Maha Maham there is the movement of Jupiter into Leo (singha rasi.) Maha Maham is of great importance at the Adi Kumbeswaran temple in Kumbakonam. There is sacred teerth (tank) called Maha Maham here.

Adikumbeswarar is another form of Lord Siva and considered very sacred. Every year in the month of Maasi a festival is conducted and the image of Lord Kumbeswara is taken out in a procession
